MIRROR IMAGE POSTURAL EXERCISES TO HELP RESTORE SPINAL ALIGNMENT
Mirror image exercises are performed to stretch shortened muscles or to strengthen postural muscles that have weakened and adapted to asymmetric abnormal postures.
Although strength and conditioning exercises have not proven to correct posture, postural exercises performed in the mirror image have shown progress in the reduction of posture and spinal displacements.
Various Mirror Image exercises can be performed to actively maneuver the posture into the opposite or Mirror Image position.
Example 1 – Abnormal Forward Head (Translation) Posture
Left: The skeletal animation shows the impact to the spine with this posture
Center: Exercise uses the patient’s muscles and neck as resistance
Right: Patient uses an elastic band secured to the head for increased contraction effort
Example 2 – Abnormal Lateral Shifted Ribcage, Mid or Lower Back Posture
Left: The skeletal animation shows the impact to the spine with a right lateral ribcage posture (translation)
Center: Exercise uses the patient’s muscles and upper body as resistance
Right: Patient uses an elastic band around the shoulder for increased contraction effort
